Is a Manual Transmission Better Than an Automatic?
The manual transmission was previously the standard style in all vehicles; however, as technology has developed, automatic transmissions have generally replaced the manual kind. Even though the vast majority of cars in North America are automatics, the manual transmission comes with many advantages.
The first, and often the most popular reason people give for picking manual over automatic is that it gives the driver a sense of being in control of the vehicle. With an automatic transmission, you always have the torque converter pushing the vehicle forward. Without the torque converter in a manual vehicle, you have an easier time breaking, and it lets you use the momentum of the engine to slow yourself down.
Less expensive to purchase. Manual transmissions are a lot cheaper than automatics. On average, a manual transmission will cost you about a thousand dollars less than an automatic of the same model, making the choice of a manual transmission car easier on your budget.
Manual cars also tend to be more fuel efficient, although that may not be a long-term benefit based on the technological updates on the automatic transmissions. Depending on driving style and road conditions, drivers can increase their fuel economy by as much as 15 percent.
Lower maintenance and repair costs. Automatic transmissions need frequent fluid changes and are prone to fluid leaks which can be very destructive. Many manual transmissions do not require any regular maintenance whatsoever. Repairs are usually more costly on automatics.
Fun to drive. While saving money, cutting down fuel use, and promoting undistracted driving are all stellar benefits, the main reason some people prefer manuals is, well, they're just a blast to drive! Automatics are boring as hell to drive.
